The London Craft Map

Information Design

Personal Project

The London Craft Map was designed to highlight the importance of physical craft and its positive impact on mental health. Blending cartography with illustration the map pinpoints some of London’s most beautiful independently owned craft shops, open studios, and workshop venues. The poster was created as part of my studies at London College of Communication.

The reverse of the map features a short piece of prose by Slipstitch owner Rosie Fletcher.
You can read an excerpt below:

Craft isn’t about making things. It is about making yourself. I make clothes that fit my body, not the sample size body that clothes shops insist I have. I have knitted through anxiety and depression, each stitch a mindful meditation, a moment that I can cope with. I have wrapped an aching, ill and broken body in a fabric cocoon of my own making. When my health collapsed in on itself like a black hole, when I could go no further than the edges of my mattress, I knitted. I made toys and scarves and hats and baby cardigans and I knitted a lace shawl I never wear. I made something for myself. I made something of myself.
